AwesomeCon 2022 Recap
By Skywing Knights // September 22, 2022
Hey all my loves!
Long time no see, I know! Gosh my life has been up in a whirlwind lately. And that explains why it’s taken me so long to bring you all this recap! I didn’t really publicly announce that I would be going to AwesomeCon 2022. That was mostly because I only went for a day. However, I was super happy to go. It was a wonderful experience to meet so many new faces and some amazing artists!
The big reason I went to AwesomeCon 2022 this year was because I volunteered to host the official Teen Titans Cosplay Meetup on behalf of Teen Titans Deep Dive. And that also included playing photographer too! (Insert that terrified emoji here, haha!) This was my first time as the lead photographer of a shoot, so I was honestly super, super nervous. Thankfully, I’ve been to many photoshoots, so I was lucky in that I basically knew what I was doing… kind of, haha. But I definitely learned a lot too!
I ended up going as Starfire to AwesomeCon 2022, which was a wonderful way to meet fellow fans throughout the day. It did make it a bit difficult to take photos though – that wig is so, so long and it’s hard to bend down in that costume sometimes. So I took that knowledge and packed it away for future reference.
It’s almost like my photography and panel goals are at conflict with my cosplay goals, I swear. Photography and panel goals? Be comfortable and make sure you can move around easily! Cosplay goals? Make the most complicated thing to wear and make sure you can barely move in it. Yep, sounds about right.
In any case, I was surprised and delighted by the number of cosplayers who came to the Teen Titans Meet Up. I can’t lie, I was fangirling pretty much the entire time – everyone just made me so happy! Here are a few of my favorite shots from the event!
Teen Titans Cosplay Meet Up at AwesomeCon 2022
I was rather delighted by the background that we had available to us. Not only did it kind of give off a ‘red carpet’ type vibe to me, but it also was great for white balancing in post if need be, haha! The lighting was a little difficult to work with, but not impossible. I typically like working with outside lighting and indoor lighting as such can be a bit of a challenge for me. A part of me wished I had a light set, but the part of me wearing Starfire was perfectly happy to not have to lug more equipment around! Overall though, I was really happy with all of the results!
In addition to hosting the photoshoot, I also got to meet several artists who have worked to bring the Titans to life in various mediums. Low and behold, Wil Wheaton came to the event! So I got to gush about his work in the Big Bang Theory and to thank him for his work as Aqualad in the Teen Titans cartoons. Don’t get me started on either!
I also finally got to meet Kami Garcia and to buy her books Raven, Beast Boy, and Beast Boy Loves Raven. (And by the way, I read and finished those books in less than a weekend!) She was absolutely lovely to talk to and her books a delight to read. My favorite was probably the last one as I loved seeing Beast Boy and Raven interacting. (Can Tara Strong and Greg Cipes please just host a panel reading that comic? I’d be so down for that!)
After meeting Kami Garcia, I was delighted to meet the illustrator Amanda Conner. She famously drew the cover of the first issue of the 2016 Starfire Solo series (along with other work for the series as well). As that version of Starfire is on my cosplay docket, it was so cool to meet the person who designed that version of one of my favorite characters. Perhaps if I meet her again, I can go wearing that version!
Overall, the event was just a very wonderful and chill experience. I tend to really enjoy conventions not filled to the brim. I feel like I can really ‘see’ others in the crowd at these events and stop to talk with others. It’s a wonderful way to meet fellow fans without feeling rushed.
(And oh my gosh, there was a Mad Mod cosplayer!! Did anyone else see them and freak out like I did??) ^^;
In any case, I hope if you managed to go that you enjoyed yourselves too! And if you came to the Teen Titans Cosplay Meet Up, don’t be a stranger! I’m also happy to provide any photos you might like. As always, more updates on future Titan Cosplay Meet Ups (And Titan lore!) will be available on Teen Titans Deep Dive.
Much love all and I hope to see you next year!
