Cosplay Wig Store Review: Assist Wig (Assist Cosplay)

A good wig can make or break a cosplay. So where can you find the best ones? Today, we’re going to talk about one of my favorite cosplay wig retailers where you can likely find the perfect wig for your next cosplay: Assist Wig (Assist Cosplay)!

About Assist Wig
Founded in December of 1992 and headquartered in Hyogo, Japan (兵庫県, 日本), Assist Wig (known by Assist Cosplay internationally) is an all inclusive Cosplay shop for the cosplay enthusiast. Though they have a little bit of everything (and I mean, everything), their primary specialty remains wigs, including wig care and styling products. Wig items sold by Assist Wig include the wigs themselves, styling gels, scissors, razors, clips, hair nets, wefts, shampoos, wig heads and so on. You name it, they have it (and I’ve likely been eyeing it). With a vast selection of wigs in various colors and styles, Assist Wig also has several rings of samples of their wig colors. This makes it easy to order from them and get the exact color you want.
In addition to their wigs, other items they sell include shoes, colored contact lenses, fake food, imitation animals, glasses, fake weapons, prosthetics, make up (such as eyebrow pencils in various anime-hair colored shades), binders, construction tools (such as foams, boards, and fabrics), camera accessories (for photographers), photo backdrops, and even some completed cosplay outfits.
Where to Buy from Assist Wig
Though they do have in person shops, Assist Wig now sells internationally online and has a website in English. Their products still have their prices listed under the Japanese Yen. So to purchase, you can use a PayPal account, which will convert the currency. If you experience any trouble, you can reach out to your credit card company. Credit cards may be declined due to unexpected purchases in foreign currencies, even if they are being converted. Also note that depending on your method of payment, foreign currency transaction fees may be incurred. So best to check beforehand!
Why Shop at Assist Wig?
The sheer variety of products they have make this a first stop shop for me whenever I go to Tokyo. Particularly when it comes to standard styling tools, they’re one of my go to’s! The array of colors is also extremely helpful and I appreciate the cosplay-specific make up they have to go with their wigs.
How The Wigs Compare to Other Sellers
Assist Wigs excels particularly when it comes to vibrancy. Their wigs come in a wide range of colors, but if you’re looking for something that really pops, Assist Wig will have it. They have three lines of cosplay wigs, the Premium, Premium Light, and Basic. Premium wigs are the thickest, followed by Premium Light (designed for easier styling), and finally Basic. However, even Basic holds up excellently for most styles. If you are aiming to styling something with spikes however, you may prefer a fuller wig from the Premium Light or Premium lines. My favorite thing above all is that even the wigs from their basic line can come in a variety of colors. Some wigs also have multiple different shades, making for a richer, more textured, realistic, and, again, vibrant looking wig.
Assist Wig does not sell pre-made lace fronts… exactly. They do sell lace front pieces, which allow you to add a lace front to a wig if you so desire. I typically buy two just in case I want a longer hairline. But for my purposes, I have found one lace piece has worked out just fine and the extra wasn’t needed. Installation of these lace front pieces is also easy once you get the hang of it.
Finally, Assist Wig also carries fashion wigs as well (or rather, natural wigs), which is a nice added bonus!
The Purchase Experience
The biggest bonus in my mind when it comes to buying from Assist Wig though comes from the fact that I can also get a number of cosplay and wig support items at the same time.
Typically, I prefer to buy from Assist Wig in person when I’m in Japan as it’s much cheaper to do so. Shipping unfortunately is extremely costly and nearly always doubles the total final price. That said, the wigs are cheaper than many that are available in the US, even with the shipping and they have fantastic quality.
I also appreciate that Assist Wig keeps up their stock of items well AND the shipping, though expensive, has always been fast for me. I’ve never had a problem of waiting endlessly for a restock or for items to arrive once I’ve sent in my order. The only time an item goes ‘out of stock’ and stays that way is if an item has been discontinued, and they do a pretty good job of taking those products down when that happens from their website. Overall, a well run company that gets you your products in a timely manner.

Assist Wig is a fantastic cosplay wig and supply store that is worth checking out, even if it means you have to pay a bit for shipping. If you’re buying more than one product, it typically is worth the cost of shipping and still can come in at a total cheaper and quicker than other wig suppliers. It’s one of the best places to find vibrant colors, with the added bonus of a vast selection of wig and cosplay support items to chose from as well.
